I'm Afraid of Amerikans
directed by Sue Dunderdale and designed by Laura Foy, at Webber Douglas Studio, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, 13 - 16 June 2018
I undertook this studio show at university at the end of my second year, collaborating closely with the designer and production manager to produce the final outcome within budget and on schedule, and leading a first year student, who assisted me on paintcalls. The design was for a painted floor and steel deck platforms at various heights. The designer wanted the floor to evoke the sea, but also rocky, grassy land; after a long sampling process it ended up being much lighter than originally planned. We decided to use a scumbled background of two light colours, a blue and a green, and then build up layers of washes and spattered darker colours over the top. There was also an intense area of spattered dark blue and black around the very edge of the playing space, to blend it out into the flat black paintwork of the auditorium.
